Fall is such a wonderful time of year and marks the coming of the holiday season. What better way to kick off the coming of the holiday season than fun-filled family activities, such as decorating the home in preparation. You can breathe new life in to the same old autumnal decorations by involving the kids. Here are some ideas for a crafty, entertainment filled weekend afternoon for all to enjoy!
Personality Comes Knocking
Wreaths are a great way to decorate the entrance to your home, and spread your family’s personality as well. Burlap wreaths are great for adding dimension and visual interest to the front door while not overwhelming the limited entryway space. To customize the wreath, have the kids pick out their favorite colors of paint swatches at Home Depot of Lowe’s and then print out a small leaf stencil from the Internet and have them trace it on to the swatches. Then cut the leaves out and secure them in the wreath with same color ball head pins. This way the children will be proud of their contribution, while adding color to an otherwise dull decoration piece.
Cornucopias
Cornucopias are a definite fall staple, but sometimes they can be too 17th century. To modernize them would be to fill them with fall flowers instead of the usual assortment of mini pumpkins, gourds, and apples. A cornucopia flower arrangement should consist of fake flowers instead of fresh since the latter will wither away before the end of fall. The most autumnal flowers to use would be mums, sunflowers, chrysanthemum, dark red dahlias and you might even want to incorporate some grasses.
Spice up the Pinecones
Pinecones are usually reserved for winter, especially the ones with the snow on top. But a fun, new way to use them is in either the wreaths or even in the cornucopias, and then when wintertime rolls around you can reuse the pinecones and spray them with the canned “snow”.
Real vs Fake Pumpkins
Pumpkins are yet another necessity to ring in the fall season, but if you purchase a pumpkin now, it’ll rot within 2-3 weeks. So better idea would be buy a fake pumpkin for now until your family goes to the pumpkin patch to pick out the best suited for your home.
