Recognize Warning Signs of Rotting Windows

Traditional problems with solid wooden sash windows include rot, swelling or distortion of the woodwork or rattling in the wind (due to shrinkage of the wood).  If your electricity bill is rising and you are noticing specific warning signs at and around your windows, this might be a great time to contact Designer Door & Window.

DD&W sells and expertly installs custom residential doors and windows, and recently earned the prestigious Angie’s List Super Service Award for superior sales and installation customer service ratings.

DD&W suggests to homeowners to be on the lookout for these signs that your home’s windows are deteriorating:

  • Drafts

Drafts that are evident when you stand close to a window. If you notice that the air temperature drastically changes its because there is exterior air leaking in.

  • Peeling paint

Peeling paint around windows is caused by exterior frames that expand and contract after moisture travels through an improperly sealed window.

  • Softness in window frames

This can be detected by using a small knife to test the wood frame. If it can be pushed easily into the wood, then decay may be occurring.

  • Frosty windowpanes

This can be caused by inadequate insulation or poor thermal material that permit cold air inside the home. Condensation causes the frost or ice to form.

  • Difficult operation

When a window requires a prop to stay open or is swollen shut and must be replaced.

  • Noise

If you can hear everything that is happening outside the home, it is caused by deteriorating insulation around the windows.

The winter season is a great time to replace deteriorating windows because you will see immediate results. As winter weather sets in, energy costs will be reduced and the home will be warmer and more comfortable.
